From the desk of Father Cory
Scott Baker is a pitcher for the Minnesota Twins
professional baseball team. Over his last eight starts he has posted a 5-2
record with an ERA under 3. For those of you who do not follow baseball that
is very good. On August 31 Baker pitched an amazing game. He went into the
ninth inning not giving up a HIT. It was hilarious. While in the dugout everyone moved away
from him. They did not want to get him nervous or jinx him. Baseball players
have a certain level of superstition. He ended up givING up one hit in the
game. Not many pitchers accomplish such a task. If a baseball fan thought that was amazing they should
have listened to the interview with Baker. I did not see the interview but I
was told that Scott Baker was humble. He did not talk about his great talent
but talked about those that helped him become a professional baseball player
including God. This is refreshing for me to see a good role model in sports.
Many times our society honors role models that have poor character, are
fools, and even jerks. Scott Baker took the high road as he humbled himself.
He could do this because he realizes in some way that he is not the center of
the universe. Many stars fail in this respect. Many people are obsessed with honor. They are so worried
about the impression they are making or what people are thinking that it
drains them of their enjoyment. Scott Baker has a long hard road ahead of
him. However, if he continues humbling himself he will enjoy the game of
baseball. Baker set an example for all of us. We do what we do not for honor
but for ourselves, family, and ultimately God. I believe that humility is one
of God’s favorite virtues. God bless, Fr. Cory Rohlfing No Tax Dollars for Abortions Last
year in Minnesota there was an increase of more than 5% in abortions over the
previous year of 2005. Taxpayer funding of abortions accounted for 28% of all
State abortions. Make an effort to contact your Minnesota Legislature to end
funding of abortions. Mass Readings, Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading – Exodus 32:7-11,
